The Best (and Worst) Baby Formulas of 2026

A No-Nonsense Ingredient Breakdown

By Alex Rogers, President — ProteinFactory.com

Let’s get something straight.

Infant formula is not a branding contest.
It’s not about pretty cans.
It’s not about “gentle,” “gold,” or “neuropro” stamped in metallic ink.

It’s powdered macronutrients feeding a developing human brain.

All formulas legally sold meet FDA minimum requirements [1]. That means babies won’t starve.

It does NOT mean the formula is well designed.

When I evaluate formula, I don’t care about marketing claims. I care about:

• Protein structure
• Carbohydrate source
• Fat composition
• Soy exposure
• How closely it resembles human milk physiology

Breast milk is the gold standard [2]. Everything else is an imitation.

The question is: how bad is the imitation?

2026 FORMULA RANKINGS

(Visual chart provided above.)

Now let’s break them down the right way.

⭐⭐⭐⭐½

Little Oak Natural Goat Milk Infant Formula

This is what happens when someone actually tries.

Protein

Whole goat milk.

Goat milk contains lower αs1-casein than cow’s milk and forms a softer gastric curd [3]. Translation? Often easier digestion.

That’s real physiology — not marketing.

Carbohydrate

Lactose first.

Lactose is the primary carbohydrate in human milk [5]. It supports calcium absorption and beneficial gut bacteria [6].

No corn syrup solids.
No maltodextrin.

That alone puts it ahead of most U.S. formulas.

Fat

Vegetable oil blend, but intelligently structured.

Would I prefer more native dairy fat and MFGM? Yes [7].
But this is still cleaner than 90% of the market.

Verdict

Simple. Thoughtful. Biologically reasonable.

One of the best you’ll find.

⭐⭐⭐⭐½

Anmum NeoPro1

New Zealand dairy base.

And it shows.

Protein

Demineralized whey + milk protein.

Whey-dominant formulas empty from the stomach faster and are closer to early human milk ratios [4,8].

This is how you design protein.

Carbohydrate

Lactose first. Correct.

Not glucose polymers. Not corn syrup.

Glucose polymers spike blood sugar faster than lactose [9]. Babies don’t need that.

Fat

Contains soy oil.

I don’t love it. High omega-6 exposure is not ideal [10].
But the protein and carb structure are strong enough to keep this near the top.

Verdict

Real dairy foundation. Minimal nonsense.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Kendamil Organic

This one understands fat.

Protein

Whole milk base.

That matters.

Milk fat contains palmitic acid in the sn-2 position, which improves fat and calcium absorption compared to palm oil blends [11].

Most U.S. formulas strip milk fat out and replace it with cheap oils.

Kendamil doesn’t.

Carbohydrate

Lactose first.

Correct again.

Fat

No palm oil.

Palm oil reduces calcium absorption and bone mineralization in infants [11].

Removing it is a smart move.

Verdict

Closer to real milk physiology than most American brands.

⭐⭐⭐½

Enspire (MFGM & Lactoferrin)

Best mainstream U.S. option.

That’s not saying much — but it’s true.

Protein

Milk protein + whey.

Acceptable.

Functional Additions

Lactoferrin supports iron metabolism and immune function [12].
Added bovine MFGM has been associated with improved cognitive scores vs. standard formula [13].

That’s legitimate science.

Fat

Still vegetable oil dominant.

No meaningful dairy fat structure.

Verdict

Good attempt. Still industrial.

⭐⭐⭐½

Bubs Whole Goat Milk Formula

Strong start. Slight compromise.

Protein

Whole goat milk. Good.

Same digestive advantages discussed earlier [3].

Carbohydrate

Lactose. Good.

Fat

Vegetable oil blend.

Standard. Not impressive.

Soy Lecithin

Yes, it contains soy lecithin.

No, that is not soy protein isolate. It’s a phospholipid emulsifier [14].

Is it catastrophic? No.

Is it necessary? Also no.

If you’re making a premium goat formula, remove it.

Verdict

Good formula. Not elite.

⭐⭐½

PurAmino

Medical tool.

Not lifestyle nutrition.

Protein

Free amino acids.

Used for severe cow’s milk protein allergy [15].

Necessary in those cases.

Carbohydrate

Corn syrup solids first.

That’s glucose polymer. Faster glycemic impact than lactose [9].

Fat

Includes MCTs.

MCTs are rapidly absorbed and useful in malabsorption disorders [16].

Verdict

Clinically useful. Not biologically elegant.

⭐⭐

Burt’s Bees Organic

Organic doesn’t equal superior.

Protein

Hydrolyzed whey.

Partially broken down. May reduce allergenicity [17].

Carbohydrate

Lactose.

Fine.

Fat

Soy oil in the blend.

Again — industrial vegetable oils instead of meaningful dairy fat.

Verdict

Average formulation wearing an organic badge.

⭐⭐

Simply Organic (Enfamil)

This one looks good until you read it.

Protein

Includes soy components.

Soy protein isolates require methionine fortification to meet amino acid requirements [18].

That tells you everything.

Carbohydrate

Contains maltodextrin.

Glucose polymer. Cheap. Rapid absorption [9].

Fat

Standard oil blend.

Verdict

Organic label covering cost-saving formulation.

⭐⭐

Amazon Mama Bear Gentle

Budget formula.

Protein

Milk-based with hydrolyzed whey.

Carbohydrate

Corn syrup solids first.

Not lactose.

Glucose polymers lack the prebiotic effects of lactose [6].

Fat

Palm oil included.

Palm oil reduces calcium absorption and bone mineralization [11].

Verdict

Functional. Not optimal.

⭐⭐

Nido NESTLÉ Kinder 1+

Let’s be clear.

This is not infant formula. It’s a fortified toddler milk beverage.

Protein

Milk solids and whey.

Fine.

Carbohydrate

Contains maltodextrin.

Again — processed glucose polymer [9].

Fat

Primarily soy oil and palm oil.

Almost no meaningful dairy fat contribution.

Human milk fat contains MFGM structures and complex phospholipids not replicated in oil blends [7].

I prefer fat that actually comes from milk.

Not industrial seed oils.

Verdict

Fortified beverage. Not in the same league as properly designed formula.

Gerber Good Start Soy

Hard pass.

Protein

Soy protein isolate hydrolysate.

Soy formulas expose infants to high levels of isoflavones compared to breastfed infants [19].

The long-term implications are debated — but exposure levels are undeniably higher.

Carbohydrate

Corn maltodextrin.

Fat

Vegetable oil blend.

Verdict

Use only if medically necessary.

Final Word

Here’s the reality.

Human milk contains:

• Lactose as primary carbohydrate [5]
• Dynamic whey:casein ratios [4]
• Complex milk fat globule membranes [7]
• Bioactive immune proteins [12]

Most formulas:

• Replace milk fat with industrial oils
• Replace lactose with glucose polymers
• Add soy derivatives
• Fortify synthetically to hit minimum standards

Some are closer to physiology than others.

That’s what this ranking reflects.

Choose lactose over glucose polymers.
Choose intact dairy proteins over soy isolates.
Choose meaningful milk fat over palm oil dominance.
Choose formulation integrity over marketing language.

Infant nutrition is not the place to cut corners.
